I have been counselling for many years and have had much life experience, which has contributed to my empathy and understanding. Below are details of my counselling philosophy and experience.
My method of counselling is "Person-centred." This means that I believe that each person is unique and capable of achieving wholeness - mental, physical and spiritual fulfilment.
The Person-centred philosphy focuses strongly on the relationship between the client and the counsellor, and on the therapeutic changes which can take place when the client is offered the warmth, respect and acceptance that they deserve as a human being. With these in place as a basic foundation, we can then introduce other therapeutic methods.
I am an integrative counsellor. This means that I have been trained in more than one approach. I tailor counselling according to the needs of the client. For example I may work more creatively with a creative person, if they wish. Or, I may then use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy methods with a person who prefers a more logical approach.
I also take a holistic approach to my work, and will use Life Coaching methods if this is helpful. For example where clients want to look at their habits of smoking, alcohol etc. or to look at work and career motivational issues.
As an Individual member of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), I am bound by its Ethical Framework for Good practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and subject to its Professional Conduct.
My counselling experience to date has covered a wide range of areas such as
I have helped people with issues such as loss, grief, addiction, difficulties with intimacy, relationships, as well as depression, anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. As a requirement of BACP training, I have also undergone extensive personal counselling. So I know how it feels to be a client.
